Winter Pool Closing

SWIMMING POOL CLOSING PROCEDURE

The pool closing procedure varies according to your location’s predominant winter temperature. These are general instructions; you MUST FOLLOW the equipment manufacturer’s instruction.

Clean your pool thoroughly

Applies to both in and above-ground pools, skim, vacuum, brush, scrub, walls, floor etc. If the pool is particularly dirty, and if possible, make sure you bypass the filter when you are cleaning it, else you will have to clean the filter constantly to keep it from clogging.

SUNBELT STATES

In states where the temperature seldom dips below freezing, most people can just reduce the filtration cycle per day, while using less chemicals to keep the water balance within range. By covering your pool, you can further reduce the need for filtration, chemicals, and maintenance time.

SNOWBELT STATES

In states where the temperature gets below freezing, the pool closing procedure is somewhat more involved.

Adjust pool chemical balance and shock it

Adjust pH, alkalinity and calcium hardness. According to your preferences, shock the pool with a chorine, or non chlorine based pool shock, follow package recommendations.

Wait until chlorine goes down to below 3.0 ppm to add the algaecide, elevated levels of chlorine tend to diminish the algaecide effectiveness.

Drain, blow out equipment

Lower water level 12” to 18” below the skimmer for mesh covers, and 3” to 6” for solid pool covers. If you are using a skimmer cover, you may not need to lower the water level; follow equipment recommendations.

Drain pump, filter, heater and every piece of equipment, including pipes. Pumps, filters, and chlorinators are designed with drain plugs that are used for this purpose. Remember that all water has to be drained or blown out; else it will freeze and ruin that piece of equipment.

If you have an in-ground pool, blow out the pipes. Connect a powerful blower to the skimmer to blow air through the equipment into the pool. Plug the lines using expansion plugs; then add pool antifreeze into the line.

If you have an above-ground pool disconnect and drain all pipes, and plug wall outlets.

Maintain , clean, and store equipment.

Cartridges, DE grids, must be removed and cleaned thoroughly. Every piece of equipment that can be taken out must be removed and stored indoors, follow manufacturers instructions.

Take advantage of this opportunity to perform maintenance on the equipment; clean and lubricate filter O-rings, pump, valves etc; follow manufacturer’s instructions.

Cover/protect your pool for the winter

There are several options to protect your pool during winter: solid safety covers, mesh safety covers, solid winter covers, and mesh winter covers.

Safety covers provide the highest level of protection, but they are also the most expensive. Which one is better, solid or mesh, is a subjective issue. Safety covers are held in place by anchors buried into the concrete or wood deck.

Winter covers keep the pool clean and make it much easier to open in the spring, but provide no safety protection for children or pets. Solid or mesh is a subjective preference. In-ground winter covers are held in place by water bags/blocks/tubes; above–ground winter covers are held in place by a cable and winch arrangement that secures the cover around the pool.

To facilitate even more the pool opening in the spring, especially if you have a lot of trees near the pool, a leaf net can be used.
