SWIMMING POOL PROBLEMS
Pool Strong Chlorine Odor and Complaints of Skin and Eye Irritation
Chlorine is the miracle chemical that has the power to kill bacteria, algae, and oxidize pool water contaminants. However, eventually it looses that capability and becomes incapable of sanitizing your swimming pool or spa water.
Available chlorine levels are negatively affected by evaporation, splash out, destructive UV rays, and low pH.
In the swimming pool water, chlorine kills, and oxidizes undesirable contaminants such as bacteria, algae, skin oils, sweat, perfume, soaps, etc, etc. In the process of doing its job, the chlorine combines with the contaminants and remains in the water in the form of chloramines. It is the chloramines that cause the strong chlorine odor, as well as the skin and eye irritation.
You must shock the swimming pool, raising the chlorine level to about 10 times the normal levels to break apart the chloramines bonds. Pool patio and Beyond offers a wide variety of products to help you get rid of your chloramines problem, and to guarantee that your swimming pool, or spa water remains clean, and safe.
Make sure that you keep your sanitizer level within the acceptable range. We offer chlorine based, and chlorine free sanitizers at the lowest prices.
Swimming Pool Algae
Chances are you will have to deal with an algae bloom in you swimming pool sooner or later. Algae spores come to your swimming pool carried by the wind, rain, contaminated swimsuits or equipment. If conditions are right, an algae bloom can occur seemingly overnight. The best conditions for algae are: pool water imbalance, warm temperatures, sunlight and presence of nitrates, and carbon dioxide. Add to this, possible neglect, poor water circulation, poor water filtration and sanitation, and you have the perfect conditions for algae to thrive in your swimming pool. The best algae remedy is called "prevention". Once algae have bloomed, it will cost you time, effort, and money to get ride of it. The longer you wait, the worst it gets.
Some of the problems caused by algae are: colored and cloudy swimming pool water. Algae itself is not unhealthy, but the fact that is there, is an indication that something is not quite right about your swimming pool water. Algae will eventually clog up your swimming pool plumbing, filter, and reduce sanitizer effectiveness, creating a vicious circle.
There are several thousands, yes thousands, of varieties of algae. For the purposes of your swimming pool water, we will make life simpler by referring to algae by the color it exhibits.
SWIMMING POOL GREEN ALGAE : It can be found free floating in the water, or clinging to the pool walls, specially in places of low circulation, if not controlled, it will completely cover your swimming pool walls!!
SWIMMING POOL YELLOW ALGAE : Also called mustard algae, it clings to the pool walls, and it is usually found on the shady side of the swimming pool. This type of algae can be difficult to eradicate; re-infection is common, even after it was thought to be completely eliminated. This variety of algae must be dealt with quickly and drastically. Chlorine by itself is not a cure, since this type of algae is resistant to normal levels of chorine in the swimming pool.
SWIMMING POOL BLACK ALGAE : Very difficult to eradicate, it appears as black, or blue/green spots the size if a pencil end. It creates roots that extend into the swimming pool plaster, or tile grout, if these roots are not completely destroyed, it will come back soon enough. Like yellow algae, it is resistant to normal pool sanitizer levels. Black algae contain protective layers which will keep algae destroying chemicals from entering and destroying it. Like yellow algae, it should be dealt with in a very prompt and decisive manner.
SWIMMING POOL PINK ALGAE : It resembles an algae, but it is really not an algae, it is a bacteria from the genus methylobacterium, which means that it is able to live and grow by feeding from some carbon compounds. Methane, created when plants decompose, is one of its favorite foods. The bacteria produce a heavy slimy coating that does an outstanding job of protecting the bacteria from external enemies such as chlorine or bromine, even at high levels. Like real algae, the bacterium prefers areas not exposed to the sun and with poor circulation. It shows up as spots, and streaks in the swimming pool corners, and crevices. It likes plastic surfaces and often re-appears after treatment because it may have been re-introduced in the pool by toys or other items, or it may have been hiding in a place where you couldn't see it.
When it comes to swimming pool algae, prevention is the name of the game. It is much quicker, cheaper and less painful to prevent, than to cure a pool algae infestation. Proper filtration, chemical balance, and sanitizer levels will go a long way towards preventing algae infestations in many cases. Make sure you periodically brush the swimming pool walls, and promptly dispose of all leaves and any debris in the water.
Our selection of products will help you win the battle against swimming pool algae, as well as prevent future algae infestations.

Swimming Pool Cloudy, Hazy water
Very small particles suspended in the swimming pool water can give it an appearance that can vary from slightly hazy, to an almost milky solution. These particles interfere with the filtration system, and also with the sanitizer's ability to clean your pool water.
Imbalanced water is one of the possible causes, exacerbated by high temperatures. It could also be caused by poor filtration, not running the filter long enough, or improper sanitizer level. Check you swimming water chemical balance. Once you found out what parameter is out of the acceptable range, This link will lead you to products that will bring your swimming water chemical balance under control.
You may need to change the filter cartridge, or the sand, or may need to clean your DE filter.
It could also be that the water has reached the saturation level. The "Total Dissolved Solids", TDS is so high, that the water can no longer dissolve any more particles, therefore they float in suspension. These clarifiers will capture the smaller particles, forming clumps that your swimming pool filter can easily handle. If your problem has reached a severe level, you may have to shock the swimming pool, and use the above mentioned clarifiers on a periodic basis. In an extreme case, and assuming your problem is the "Total Dissolved Solids", you may want to drain some of the water and replace with water with a low TDS number.
Swimming Pool Cloudy, colored, stains, scale
Algae and Bacteria can deposit themselves on the swimming pool surfaces in different shades of green, black, yellow, and pink. Stains are impregnated into the plaster, while algae are usually deposited on the surface, even though the roots may go deeper than that. If left long enough, other organic materials such as leaves, insects, etc. can also stain your swimming pool. Sprinkle granular chlorine on the stain, if the stain is of organic origin, it will probably disappear, if it doesn't, it probably is of inorganic nature, such as metals.
When a salt remains in suspension in your swimming pool water, it causes cloudiness. Sometimes these minerals attach to swimming pool surfaces causing crystalline deposits known as scaling. White scale is usually caused by calcium, or magnesium. Color scale is cause by metals, such as cupper, aluminum, etc. The following table illustrates some of the contaminants, where the contaminant comes from, and its effects.

Swimming Pool Cloudy, reddish color
Sometimes swimming pool owners fill their pools with water from wells, which might be high in mineral content, iron oxide (rust) among others. The result is that the water may turn cloudy with a brownish/reddish tint. The obvious solution is to refill the pool with water from other sources with less mineral content; however, this is not always possible. If you have to live with well water, you have to follow the procedure below until the problem clears:
- keep on shocking your pool
- run your pump constantly
- apply water clarifiers
- apply rust and scale removers
Be patient, it will take a while to clear but eventually it will. We offer chemicals that are perfectly suited for this application :
Shock for chlorine and non chlorine based pools
Water clarifiering chemicals
